Saul Alinsky Quote

“Life is there ahead of you, and either one tests oneself in its challenges or huddles in the valleys in a dreamless day-to-day existence whose only purpose is the preservation of an illusory security and safety.”

Is Your Shampoo Killing You?

From Best Life:
"Nearly 90 percent of the chemicals in the products you slather onto your skin—the body’s largest organ—have never undergone any testing for toxicity. That’s because the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t regulate the safety of ingredients used in cosmetic products. They defer to an industry-funded panel, called the Cosmetics Ingredient Review, which comprises just seven individuals, including a nutritional scientist and…a veterinarian. To date, they have examined a mere 11 percent of the ingredients you use to groom yourself, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit research organization based in Washington, D.C.

Scientists and toxicologists at EWG recently compared all the ingredients in nearly 25,000 grooming products (information is available online at http://cosmeticdatabase.com/index.php) with lists of potential chemical hazards compiled by 50 scientific regulatory institutions worldwide. Their findings? “Sixty percent of products on the U.S. market contain chemicals that are potential endocrine disrupters,” says Jane Houlihan, vice president of research at EWG, “and a third have ingredients that are likely carcinogens.” In the last 30 years, the United States has banned only eight ingredients from personal-care products, while the European Union has banned almost 400 ingredients by some estimates."

FYI My body wash rate a 5 out of 10 on their hazard scale.

SXSW DAY 1

Craig and I look at all the "regular people" in line, while we "filmmakers" get the special no line treatment.

SXSW Day 2

Apparently the filmmakers lounge has several classy amenities I didn't notice yesterday.

Since I love lists:
1)Free popcorn (get it?)
2)Free Fuze (I don't know either)
3)Cell phone text preventative force field

Maybe you should make a movie.

Billy Wilder on I.A.L. Diamond

This is a clip that someone has decided to translate into Spanish.

If you know:
1)Where it's from
2)Who decided it should be in Spanish
or
3)Where I can get it on dvd in English

Please place a white briefcase with a pinstripe ascot tied in a sheep shank on my fifth stair. Inside please include a treasure map that leads me to said booty (with ample time allotted for food breaks).

Now, that being said, there is still a free prize in the clip. You will know it when you see it. If you don't, then you don't know me.

The Perfect Steak? Easy Steakhouse Recipe

You can't tell from the picture, I just got a digital camera, but this is the best steak I've ever had.

It's made steakhouse style. What is steakhouse style? Well, it's the style of cooking that a steakhouse uses.Got it?

Here's the recipe.

Master Recipe
2 steaks; cut strip steaks or rib-eyes about 11/2 inches thick, filet mignon, 21/2 inches
2 teaspoons grapeseed or canola oil
Kosher salt

• Remove steaks from refrigerator 2 hours before cooking time. Dry them with a paper towel.

• Preheat oven to 400 degrees, with a rack set in the middle.

• Heat a heavy, cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat, until a few drops of water sprinkled in the hot pan evaporate within 3 seconds.

• Coat the bottom of the pan with 2 teaspoons of grapeseed or canola oil.

• Liberally salt the steaks with kosher salt, about 3/4 teaspoon for each steak.

• Place steaks in pan and sear for 2 minutes on each side, flipping only once with tongs.

• Transfer the steaks, still in the pan, to the oven and roast for roughly 8 to 9 minutes for 11/2-inch steaks to achieve medium-rare (an instant-read thermometer should register between 125 and 130 degrees).

• Let the steaks rest, under a tent of aluminum foil, for 5 minutes before serving.

It's easy and the best thing I've ever had.
I highly recommend you use Prime beef.

Good Advice

"It's never going to be over, so stop waiting for the good stuff. As of now, spend a minimum of one hour a day doing whatever you are waiting to do until your finances are more secure, or until the children have grown and left home, or until you have finished your obligations and you feel free to do what you really want to do. Don't wait any longer. Don't believe in the myth of "one day when everything will be different." Do what you love to do, what you are waiting to do, what you've been born to do, now."

Pre-production 2

We have a movie. It's going to be fantastic.

All we need now is free food to feed people.

Saturday, October 27, 2007

On Pre-Production. Sort of.

Making a movie is an amazing thing. You should try it.

I'll share something.

Sometimes in the beginning you can get so lost in the scramble you don't stop to look up. Balls deep in emails, text messages, and trying to make the pieces fit.

I'm taking classes at coldtowne theater and one of their phrases is "improv is life". Wait. Maybe it's "improv is everything". Hold. See, now I think it's something else. Either way you should check out coldtowne.

What was I saying? Movies, ok. The point was that "movies are life" and "everything is everything". Perhaps if I would have payed more attention in class and "applied myself" instead of making people laugh, I would have the ability to articulate my thoughts on this matter. I know, I 'll use a movie quote:

"Life goes by pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Here's what I'm saying:

Take a step back.

Remember to breathe.

Enjoy the things that matter.

Best Comedy Troupe: ColdTowne
What do you get when a bunch of displaced NOLA kids start doing improv locally, gaining enough exposure and word-of-mouth to turn the ever-empty Space in to something useful: a place to laugh? You get ColdTowne, changing tragedy into comedy, their fate into a movement of laughter, right here in our lucky town. No one could ever be grateful for Katrina, but our readers are very grateful for ColdTowne coming to our town.

Do you work at a restaurant that will donate dinner for 2? Can your boyfriend get us tickets to a show? Will your cousin steam clean someone's three bedroom duplex?

Please email us if you have any connections.

Also, we hope everyone can come out to our event. More details soon.
